Cultural Tours are the best way to experience the richness, vibrancy and importance of Maori culture in New Zealand and to learn about some of the Maori cultures most precious treasures – the stories of the traditions.
Maori oral history describes Kupe as a great navigator and warrior. It is believed he discovered Aotearoa, New Zealand. After living here for a short while, he returned to his home, Hawaiki, to tell his people about the discovery. They eventually settled Aotearoa, New Zealand, after crossing the ocean in Waka canoes guided by Kupes navigational records.
Te Papa Museum is Rongomaraeroa a concept marae created by leading Maori artists. While it pays homage to traditional Maori art techniques, it’s also the product of modern art practices. This image shows the wharenui (meeting house) within Rongomaraeroa. New Zealand has thousands of wharenui around the country representing local tribal groups.
Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell carved Ngatoroirangi, his first ever rock carving, onto the cliff face at the southern end of Mine Bay, Lake Taupo. The best way to view the carving is by sea kayak. Trips begin with a launch trip to the site, then visitors transfer to kayaks to view the carvings.
The Treaty of Waitangi is the founding document of New Zealand. The land on which this historic event took place is preserved for all time. Visitors can enjoy informative multimedia presentations, guided tours and live performances. The grounds include a beautifully carved meeting house, the restored colonial treaty house and a large, ornately carved Maori war canoe.
The kauri tree and the sperm whale are considered by Maori people to be chiefs of their environments. When the whale invited the kauri to live in the cool and refreshing ocean, the kauri declined. At the whales suggestion however, they agreed to exchange skins. That is why the bark of the kauri is thin and full of resin-like oil.
